Coyotes

altivo and animist have inadvertently started a meme with their posts about seeing coyotes. Here's my experience:

In 1994 I was on a road trip to the Badlands and Black Hills of South Dakota (insert guitar part to "Rocky Raccoon" here). One of the camp-out nights was in Badlands National Park south of Wall, SD. The moon was nearly full, and I was sitting at the picnic table near my tent and truck, with a candle lantern for light and a notebook for writing. Off in the grass just past the edge of the campground, I heard a whole lot of dog-like barking and yipping and little howls, and I knew it had to be coyotes. I walked over toward the grass where I thought they were, but didn't see or hear anything. But when I went back to the picnic table they started up their chorus again, before moving on. That was really cool even though I didn't actually see the coyotes.

I was actually writing the words to "What In God's Name" that night (the parody of Jim Perkins' "How In God's Name", which jjfmi knows now from his help on recording it for the new CD).

Still in Louisville. Having a good time, but I'm leaving in a couple of hours to come back to Detroit. I understand there was some snow there over the weekend. No snow here, and there was even less rain than originally predicted. Wolf and I went to dinner with animist last night -- it was good to see you again, Bob. We also went to Otter Creek Park on the Ohio River southwest of Louisville on Saturday; that was nice and quiet.

I have a similar story but it involves ducks.

Bryna, who I have written a few childrens musicals with, and I were at a park with our guitars working on some music. We were sitting on a picnic table with our feet on the bench. A few hundred ducks came walking towards us, which was a little freaky. Bryna started singing a spontaneous duck song. I joined in. The ducks sat in front of us, apparently listening. They were looking at the two of us too which was kinda weird, but interesting. We stopped playing, they all started quacking and moved on.

Have a safe drive home.

Wow...that would've been a bit freaky, but cool. A concert for the ducks. :-)

I'm home now -- really late, but then I left town really late too. I actually made good time for once, and got to see two of my cousins to boot. (More details to come.)
