Tape project update: I think I'm almost done. I have gathered 11 tracks of songs, instrumentals, and guitar ideas so far, plus one more track of my friend James The Writer reading one of his works at an open mic with accompaniment by Ted (who's president of the Detroit Folklore Society) on resonator guitar. I have a stack of about five tapes with other guitar idea snippets on it, and then I think I'm going to stop.

The dozens of other tapes are either (1) songs I eventually recorded in finished form and put on my two released CDs or (2) open mic performances of pretty much the same songs that ended up on my CDs. I don't need those.

What I'd rather do now is record again. This is not the announcement of a big new project or even a new CD. I just want to set things up and see what happens.

The "set things up" bit is what's challenging. I have to make space in some room where I can do this -- that means moving boxes of stuff and keepsakes, most of which really can't just go to the storage unit. Then I have to set up the actual gear, which means installing ProTools and the M-Audio sound card/module on the laptop, and I don't really know how that's going to work yet. (A long time ago, I wrote about how it turned out I bought the ProTools/M-Audio package before I realized it wouldn't work on my usual machine's WinXP Home edition, but it should work on any flavor of Win7.) So, basically I have a lot of work to do before I can actually play. So there's no timetable on this. Watch this space, I guess.
