Isn't this election over???

I got robo-called twice today. The second time there was no message left. The first time it was the widow of Bo Schembechler, the late and legendary coach of the University of Michigan football team, asking me to vote for someone in particular for the university's board of regents. Really? They went there?

Mind, I don't even know why we vote for university boards. We vote for three: University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University. How many voters know enough about the issues confronting large universities to vote for a board member? I'm glad we don't have to vote for the boards of the other 15 public universities in Michigan. The result is the same either way, a bunch of rich political flunkies, most of them white.

I've gotten a flyer from the same local judge candidate every day this week. Today she says her opponent has been saying bad things about her. Well, s/he must've been using some other medium, because the print shops have been taken over by printing her literature over and over and over.

OK, it'll all be over Tuesday. Just take deep cleansing breaths and mute the telephone....

Do whatever it takes to prevent robo-calls. If you have to cut all the telephone poles down yourself, do it. They're a pox upon our land.

Our politicians do not give out balloons. I might be more favorably predisposed to them if they did. We sometimes get pens and other office supplies with their names on them -- I got a ruler from a city council candidate once. Couldn't trust it for measuring because, y'know, a politician was involved. But it was unique.

We rarely hear an actual robocall except for the phone ringing. All calls go to the answering machine, we pick up when we know who it is. The robocallers evidently can tell when they get a machine, and hang up without leaving messages.

We're getting calls from as far away as Texas, and they are very persistent. They are also using cell phones to call, so that caller ID gives only the number and no name.

I would vote for a candidate who was willing to make this garbage illegal. The content of the calls is invariably mud-slinging and other trash. The current big deal in Illinois is panicky voices warning you not to vote for the Libertarian candidates "because they are tied to Obama." Of course they are not, but because they do mostly stand even farther right than the loony GOP candidates, they tend to split the wingnut vote and that does benefit the Democrats' more centrist position. "Centrist" is no longer a good term though. American politics no longer has a left hand. It's totally lopsided. Even Obama has turned out to stand right of center and in the camp of the corporate wealthy.

The worst thing about political ads now is that they either outright lie or they allege the worst possible outcome of the side they oppose. It's impossible to call them on this bullshit, because politicians do whatever they can to avoid encountering opposition face-to-face.

And I agree about the near-total lack of a real left in America -- there isn't even a real progressive movement in politics anymore. I've complained before about how the Democratic leaders have shouted down any left-leaning opposition. They've been so effective, I'm sure Republican leaders are wishing they tried that with their far-right leaning members. But we really need a left movement here, because at the rate we're going, we're going to be back to the days of Andrew Jackson before we know it.

Remember we are talking about targeting voters who would otherwise be likely to vote for some of the looniest wingnut candidates the GOP has ever produced. It's not much of a stretch for them to switch to the looniest Libertarians. Anyone likely to vote Oberweis into the Senate or Rauner into the governor's mansion is capable of absolutely any insane act in the voting booth.
