Making things up from scratch

Well, I think I got the orphans all packed up and onto a train. Perhaps somewhere out west they'll find good homes.

Seriously, though, thanks for any kind words and thoughts on my annual indulgence in fancy. I use Lewis Carroll's birthday not only as a chance to indulge in sort of a meme but also to take a stab at fiction, even speculative fiction. There has long been an itch in the back of my mind to try more fiction writing. I mean, back to my early teens, that long. For a lot of reasons, though, I haven't really managed much that's in a presentable form. It's not that I don't create in other ways, but it always seemed fiction would be the ideal. And yet, I don't read a lot, and I can barely conceive of crafting something even novella-length. Well, don't let me beat myself up over it here. Anyway, it's fun to attempt fiction, especially if it turns out pretty much the way I wanted it to.

Writing fiction is fun, but it's hard work, too!

You have to create an entire world-and have it seem real to the reader-as well as to yourself.
