Who Am I? Botanical edition

Wood sprite
This is a photo I took in June of 1988 and only recently scanned it to make a file for Flickr. I saw this flower in a woods not far from Lake Michigan at Hog Island Point State Forest Campground, near Epoufette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It was about a hundred or so yards from the beach in pretty thick woods. It was a cloudy day, though, so it might've looked thicker than it was. There was a small stand of these flowers. Very pretty, yes?

I might have had an idea what species it was 23 years ago, but I've lost that information now. Does anyone have a clue? Even a relatively broad family name would be good to have.

I just sent this to my mother (the horticulturist) to see what she says. I will report back when I have more information...

I'm guessing _Iris versicolor_, but I'm no expert.

If it's actually a wildflower and not a garden escape, it's some sort of blue flag. Flags are ancestors or close relatives of the garden variety iris. If it's an escape, it's something like a Siberian iris I think.

Wow, good answers, all. I can't say whether they were native or an escape (or introduced), since it's been over 20 years, and it's in a state forest campground where it's possible someone planted it (not real likely, since the state forest campgrounds have only basic development). So for all I know it could be Siberian iris (Iris siberica or a blue flag (I. versicolor). I probably should go back next June to do further research (an euphemism for "camping trip.")

See, this is why I stuck with birds. There's only 600-some of those. Plants are almost innumerable as near as I can tell and their differences are sometimes very subtle.

Thanks!
