The working out is working out

I'm wearing size 42 jeans today.* At the beginning of the year I was wearing 46. During 2010, all my size 46 pants were mostly a bit snug, in the way that implied I might have to buy new pants.

Just over six months ago, I joined a gym that opened about three miles from me. Since then, I've been going there at a minimum of two times a week, often three or four. The workouts have been more challenging than I've ever attempted before, thanks to the trainer I've been working with. (She's little, but she's fierce!) Granted, everything's harder when you're several dozen pounds overweight, but the trainer is pushing me in ways I never really pushed myself before, doing different types of exercises and doing them faster. I'm doing exercises with free weights—deadlifts and squats, even! Even if I wasn't losing weight, stuff is firming up and redistributing in flattering ways. And I have lost about 23 pounds since January—I confirmed that with my doctor this week.

My immediate goal is to keep up with the regular workouts, work on making my diet healthier (the hardest part, really), and make progress with both weight and fitness. Longer term, my trainer thinks I could be a bodybuilding contestant. No lie, she has said this, because of my frame and the build underneath the, um, adipose tissue. It's really not the first time I've heard it. I have time to come to a decision on that goal, of course. I have a lot of work to do on just the basics first.

For now, I'm just trying to get healthier. If that means I have to go shopping for new, better-fitting pants, I'll be happy to put up with that burden.

* (That's inches around the waist. Sorry, I don't know what the equivalent size would be in the Old World.)

That's terrific..! The cover of GQ isn't far away! ;-)

I need to read this entry over and over to inspire myself to spend some more time at my own gym...

Thanks :) Just hope I don't outgrow my shirts from working my shoulders out too much. Shirts are hard to buy for that when you're already big. :)
