Breezes, fireflies, and music

The music festival season is ongoing. I'm pretty certain that I'll be going to both of my usual festivals, Blissfest (second weekend in July) and Hiawatha (next-to-last weekend in July). I'm going to wait a few more days to buy tickets to leave myself some wiggle room in case of developments in other areas of my life. I'll probably order the Bliss ticket by the weekend.

I think I mentioned earlier that due to a calendar quirk, the two festivals are not on succeeding weekends as usual this year, but instead they're two weeks apart. This means I'll be driving up for one, then back home, then back up for the other. This probably couldn't possibly be a better year for this sort of thing. I'm sure the petroleum companies are already spending the extra money. Someone's gonna get another yacht! But the upside is, when I go to Bliss, I don't have to pack eleven days' worth of stuff. And when I go to Hiawatha, I won't have to pack the huge pavilion tent because I never use it there (costs extra to do so, and the trees do better what the pavilion does).

All I have to do now is figure out how I will handle playing a lot of guitar (maybe mandolin too, mostly guitar) again. Since November I haven't been playing much at all and my calluses have gotten pretty soft. I fear some of my skills have, too. The reason why is more than I want to get into at the moment, except to say that a primary reason is that I've been busy with my mom during her recovery and my fitness workouts. I hope to play a good bit in July, so I'm trying to play more now. It hasn't been easy to fit in, unfortunately. Well, if I don't jam much, at least there will be music to listen to. That's why they bring people in and put them on a stage, isn't it?

These festivals are usually a lot of fun. It's immersion therapy in a way. Plus the weather is usually very nice, except when it rains a lot—then it's quite a challenge. It almost always is cooler weather than down in the city, which I enjoy a lot.

How Blissful!
I'm sure there's some sort folk parody of "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" ("Mandolin Never Forgets", perhaps?) There's a song assignment in there, I'm sure. You took a necessary break to deal with tough family stuff, but you'll probably find it's like being on a bicycle - jump back on, and it'll all come back. (You'll probably want to keep a lyric book handy, though - trust me on this one.) :-)

After considerable thought back and forth, I'm going to come up to Bliss after all. Lori and I are trading vehicles for a week or two, while I bring the trailer a bit closer. Leslie's been kind enough to store it on her property since last Fall. I found a nearby campground at which to prep it and figure out what I have and/or need. But his might be the last time for a while, though, unless I invest in a good-sized tent. It's the last year for the lease on the Explorer - when Lori turns it in, she's considering buying a vehicle that actually gets decent mileage (what with $4.00/gallon gas and all). And my Focus isn't designed for towing - so... we'll have to use some landmark in the Back 40 other than the popup. :-)

Are you planning to hit some open mics anytime soon? Let me know where & when - if I can, I'll join you. And once you're getting back in the swing of music, it would be fun to put a show together - been way too long. :-)

Re: How Blissful!
Glad to hear you're going to go to Bliss. And not just because your popup makes a good windbreak. :) Gas prices are going down even, if only for a little while.

I can understand very well why Lori would consider something with a little better gas mileage than the Explorer. I don't suppose they make aftermarket towing packages for a Focus, huh?

I don't think I have much free time between now and Hiawatha for open mics, unfortunately, but maybe in August I'll be able to find some. I seem to recall playing with other people is a fun thing, and you're one of the funner people to play with. And I definitely know where the lyric book is. :)
