The Arts News Edition, kind of

There goes Tchaikovsky: Detroit's Channel 4 news reports that the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (aka the management) has canceled all performances of the symphony through November 7. The concerts on the weekend of Nov. 3-5 were to include Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony and the famous guitar concerto by Rodrigo, Concierto de Aranjuez. Other concerts were to include a DSO premiere of a new work and Rachmaninoff's first symphony, plus a pops concert for Halloween.

Local poet/rising star David Blair (or simply Blair) has been making big waves this year with several overseas visits — he just got back from Siberia! — and the debut of a CD by his band Blair & the Boyfriends. A poem of his has been published in the online journal Muzzle, and it struck me as evocative and meaningful and damn fine poetry.

As for me, I'm kinda stalled out with creative endeavors. I actually played jjfmi's open mic this week. which was my first open mic anywhere in about three weeks. Work has me pretty much swamped these days, I guess. I might push myself to go see some live music this weekend, just to see if it's still out there.

In a couple of spare moments I've been playing with photography, specifically studio-style self-portraits, but it's been a trial-and-error process that isn't really yielding much art yet. I've always found that to be a frustrating process, but at least it's faster now with digital photography. I used to shoot a roll of film and wait a week to find out everything was underlit and off-center. Now I see the mistakes a lot faster without that pesky week of hoping. Actually, I was going to write about this separately, wasn't I? (So I said on Sunday.)
