This morning I got a message from an alert reader (just like Dave Barry, all my readers are alert) saying this:

Your LJ has been infected with the Actns/Swift.T virus (whatever that is
-- when I connect to the CA antivirus page, it has no info on it). Every
time I connect to your LJ page, it deposits this virus on my hard drive,
which my CA antivirus then promptly removes. I believe it's coming in
through the YouTube link you posted on 11/13. Just a theory, but that's
now showing as a blank window, which ain't right.
I edited the November 13 entry so that the whole thing is behind an LJ-cut, so at least my main page should be problem-free, although I guess you really shouldn't go to that specific entry unless your anti-virus is up to date. (And as a side note, I should say that this applies to Mac users now, too.)

I haven't encountered a virus or worm problem with this video, myself, but I did note this morning that, at the end of the video, it seemed to hang up and not display the usual selection of related videos. It did this whether I was here or at YouTube, and whether I used Internet Explorer or Firefox.

This does not mean that I've been immune to trouble. In the last month, I've gotten a couple of suspicious Web blow-ups that looked like worms or viruses. One of them disrupted my attempt to post my first Sean FitzGerald entry on MySpace, the night before I went to Chicago (not exactly the time I wanted to disinfect my computer). Another episode happened to my Mac at work, while visiting traffic.com, which is hardly a disreputable site, ordinarily.

This really sucks, y'know. What angers me most is that this is all happening in sites I have no control over, and I think it's mostly coming through ad boxes and banners on these sites. It's probably possible to block ads via browser settings, but that causes a lot of other problems. In fact, it's probably not even 100% effective, judging by the popups that I get from CasaleMedia even though I block popups — and this from such "fly-by-night" operations as CNN and IMDB.

I just have to shake my head at the people who have nothing better to do than to cause problems like this. This is why we can't have nice things.

In conclusion, I feel I should apologize to anyone who's come here and encountered worm problems due to that video. I didn't know it was causing a problem, and I've at least hidden it for now, and might un-embed the video and replace it with a link. (It's not a very good video, anyway.) Edited 4 Dec 08 to add: I did replace the embedded video in that post with a link.

Got it without going to you tube. Believe it is a malware selling an anti virus program

Re: actns
There are a few of those around. The packages they're trying to sell are usually (probably always) inferior to McAfee, Norton, CA, and those types. As for the people who program and use those malware techniques, well, hanging's too good for 'em, but they ought to be put out of their misery.
