I flunked this meme and didn't even post it. Zero underlines, almost every one that I could bold would get crossed out.

You, sir, are an equine of refined and distinguished taste. There's not much on here that would be uncriticized by either a nutritionist or a real chef—likely both would have many complaints. A vegetarian could make a decent meal out of, say, BD's Mongolian BBQ, but like most chain restaurants the atmosphere is pretty loud and you might be put off by that (although a weeknight is pretty calm).

I have way more experience with these restaurants than is probably good for me, but that's pretty typical in Amurrika today.

Yeah, I'm definitely the odd horse out, even for my own age group I think. Of that whole list, the only ones I've ever really been tolerant of were Olive Garden and Red Lobster. Their food passes muster, but in recent years they've grown so crowded and raucous that we skip them. It's probably been ten years now...

The rest just screams "Fat! Salt! Sugar!" at me, in addition to the noise and crowd. On long road trips, which I rarely do any more, we have been known to stop at some of those places because they are open longer hours or are the ones that tend to be planted next to the interstate.

Ultimately, though, I've been spoiled by our own home cooking. Nothing else measures up to my standards. I'm always puzzled why so many people choose never to cook at home.

You may be interested in this conversation in a journal I read... he's a British guy living in Germany who's just had a trip to America and comments on the food and what it did to him: http://footpad.livejournal.com/498462.html

I like Olive Garden, because it seems like good food not just in taste but in quality. But it gets a comment above about how everything is pretty much pre-made and heated up there, which kind of bums me out.

Speaking only for me (though I suspect it's more widespread), since I would be cooking for myself almost exclusively, it's really hard to convince myself to cook from scratch. Hard to make the quantities of ingredients reasonable, hard to put in the effort when there are other things that I want to do. I generally do OK when cooking for family or for Dave, but otherwise I'm not terribly interested in cooking. Some other activity in my life would have to go if I committed to cooking regularly.

(Somewhere here I feel like I should apologize or promise to do better....)

Aw, cooking for one is not such a big deal. Good grief, I've been doing it much of my life without giving anything up. In fact, it saves considerable amounts of time and money in my opinion.

Anyway, I'd say the apologies are due to yourself, not me. You could be eating healthier food and for less.

I realised something. The time it takes me to chop and fry/boil some vegetables is the same as the time it would take me to cook a ready meal in the oven. (Assuming no microwaves, but microwaving ready meals is a bit chavvy even for me.)
