Saturday News Review

The Truth Squad: separating the facts from rhetoric (Louisville Courier-Journal, September 6, 2008) ... Takes some of the statements made at the Republican National Convention and finds the truth behind them, or what isn't the truth. We all need to be examining what politicians say for truth. (I don't know if there was a similar article following the Democratic National Convention.)

I've seen this in a couple of different places now: Classical to Rap: Music lovers have much more in common than you would think (The Independent, September 5, 2008) ... Y'know, Dave and I have been known to come back from a Shostakovich concert at the DSO and then turn on MTV2's Headbangers Ball. Turns out that personality traits of classical music fans and metalheads are supposedly similar. Now we understand....

Meet the Music Video 2.0 (Yahoo/AP, August 26, 2008) ... The music video is dead, long live the music video. New auteurs are using minimalist techniques and equipment, taking music video back to basics. Includes links to some innovative music video makers such as http://takeawayshows.com (they shot R.E.M.) and http://blackcabsessions.com (all shot in the back of a London cab; they filmed Death Cab for Cutie, of course). Of course you can see a lot of this sort of thing already on YouTube.

There. I wanted to add more, but three's a nice round number.

Classical music and heavy metal...
*grin*

According to Professor North, both heavy metal and classical fans are united by a shared "love of the grandiose", which means that a Metallica fan is far more likely to listen to Mahler than an indie kid is to give reggae a try.

"Aside from their age difference, they're basically the same kind of person," he said. "Lots of heavy metal fans will tell you that they also like Wagner, because it's big, loud and brash. There's also a sense of theatre in both heavy rock and classical music, and I suspect that this is what they're really trying to get at when they listen."

That describes my music perfectly! Most of my favorite songs go over the top, and halfway up the next mountain.

Over the top and halfway up the next mountain ... sounds like good music to me!

It doesn't mention what folk/acoustic fans are like. Maybe the researchers just shook their heads sadly and went on to Reggae.
