Welcome to Michigan... here's your tin cup

Detroit's woes augur ill for US did not appear in the Detroit Free Press, or the Detroit News, or even the New York Times. It's on the BBC's news web site, fer cryin' out loud. And they did not make this up. Unemploment is twice the national rate, poverty is up, home foreclosures are a big business, and there's a feeling that we're severely stuck in a bad rut.

My cousin who used to live up north moved to Louisville this summer. She had spent months and months looking for a job in Michigan. But she was employed by the end of the first week she was in Louisville. Must be nice to have an economy, eh? But there is more than auto plants to sustain metro Louisville.

Twenty or thirty years ago, a common cynicism around here was the phrase "Would the last one out of Michigan turn out the lights?" I'm afraid we're about at this point again. Even many of us with jobs are anxiously looking over our shoulders. It's not exactly fun.

Seems that I heard that Detroit has the highest unemployment or poverty rate in the country. D has been looking for a job for years without luck. If I could afford it I'd move to Chicago in a New York Minute.

I think moving to New York in a Chicago minute would be pretty fast, too...
