Mr. Lightfoot, we need a new song....

Century-Old Shipwreck Found in Superior. This one is named Cyprus, lost on only her second voyage, from Superior, Wisconsin to Buffalo, New York in October 1907. The wreck was found offshore from the town of Deer Park, midway between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point.

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Society made the original announcement this morning; their press release is at http://www.shipwreckmuseum.com/press.phtml?artid=78 . The press release gives more information about the ship itself, while the Associated Press story relates first-hand information from the sole survivor of the wreck, who fortunately washed ashore close to the lifesaving station at Deer Park.

Note: I've never tried linking to a news story from WOW's web portal; please let me know if it doesn't work, and in case it doesn't, here's the AP story from the Marquette Mining Journal: http://www.miningjournal.net/stories/articles.asp?articleID=19857 .
