Friday Night Music in Ann Arbor

Tonight's entertainment was provided by Mr. Steve Deasy in performance at Crazy Wisdom Book Shop and Tea Room in beautiful downtown Ann Arbor. Steve played a very good show, one that seemed to be nicely matched to the performance space. He also debuted a new song, whose name I can't remember much to my chagrin, but it's kind of his first social message song and it's well done -- singalongable too (which is why I'm chagrined; I sang along to it twice).

Since the show was in a bookstore, I had to buy at least one book. The store specializes in spiritual and metaphysical books and products, and related areas. There was a lot of things I looked at, but I'm not "into" those areas enough to know what to buy. So I ended up with The Best American Short Stories 2006 (decades-old series, collect them all!) and the latest Utne Reader. I would've bought them anyway at some point at a Borders, so I feel good having bought them at an indie store.

On the way home, I got the urge to listen to Loreena McKennitt's album The Book of Secrets (the one with "The Mummers' Dance" on it). I'd forgotten how good that album is.

By the way, next Friday Finvarra's Wren is playing at The Ark. I may be back in Ann Arbor again very soon.

As a former semi-independent bookstore employee I applaud you for this.

The Mummers' Dance is gorgeous. I've always thought it would be good for the soundtrack of the Harry Potter films. I saw a sign for her tour outside the Ottawa National Arts Centre during my July trip. Apparently she'll be there on 15 Sept. No real news on her website about a US tour, unfortunately. They're in the "planning stages", says the site. I've never seen her in concert and I'd love to.
