Weekend update

I have a cold. It's supposed to be 90 frickin' degrees tomorrow and I have a cold. I suppose it's less unfortunate than having, say, malaria, but still.

Today was my great-niece Sophia's first birthday party. She made out like a bandit, with a whole lot of clothes and toys and a whole bunch of people visiting. I got her a plastic toy lawn mower. It has a lever to engage the blade, though of course it doesn't have a real blade, and a key to start it up, and even a hole with a cap that looks like you'd put gas in. The box said it was a "mulching" mower, though it doesn't look quite like it would mulch much (or cut, really). When we got one for her dad, they didn't have mulching toy lawn mowers, just regular ones. When I was a kid, I had to play with a real lawn mower with the engine and blade taken off. And when my mom was a child, she had to play with a goat.

Well, OK, I made that last part up.

Apparently the new tradition is to give the newly-minted one-year-old her own cake — it's smallish, usually just yellow cake with frosting — and let her go at it on her own sans utensils. Once she figured out that it was food and it was for her, it didn't take long until she was frosted and full of cake, not just her mouth but all over her body. People seem to find messy little kids cute, I guess. The rest of us had a different cake that we ate the newfangled way, with forks. Afterward, she had to be cleaned up with a bucket and a sponge, and THEN a bath. This is something a child experiences only once in her life, for obvious reasons.

Today was awful tiring, though, between my cold and the heat and the party. My plan is to sleep as much as I can on Sunday. I may have to adjourn to a coffee house for coffee and air conditioning at some point, but that's about as ambitious as I plan to get.

OK.. The cake thing... Way back tradition.. I believe my mom has my photo with that little personal destruction cake. It's just a common sense thing since a one year old usually tries to face plant in the cake anyway to have one that everyone else gets to safely partake in while the child gets to have free rain over their own little piece of frosting heaven (or hell if you're the parent). Wow.. That that was one hell of a run on, but I'm too tired to think in proper sentences anyway.. No.. Cleaning the child up with the garden hose makes the whole thing a lot more fun for the adults, but I think they call that child abuse these days.. Oh well..

Good luck staying cool.. The AC has been on for a few weeks for me.. That's what happens on the second floor.. No gap.. Directly from heat on to AC on..

Are you doing Bliss this year??

I honestly don't know about Bliss. The line up is just not very compelling. Sure, there's always someone up there who I didn't know previously who impresses me a lot. But there's usually a couple of acts there I already know I like, and that isn't there this year.

I haven't decided one way or another yet, I guess is the truth. Maybe I should figure it out soon, because it's less than a month away....

I don't know if Sophia's cake adventure qualifies as a "new tradition" - it might be new by our generation's standards. Caitie had a similar experience at her first birthday party (almost 14 years ago) - one which we managed to capture on videotape. It was definitely a "hands-on" experience for her (or would that be "hands-IN"..?). The cleanup afterwards did partially involve the garden hose.

walruswoman and I have told her that, as long as Caitie keeps her grades up, such videos will never see the light of day on YouTube. (Maybe that explains the straight-As....) :-)

Feel better soon, ok?

Maybe it'll be fun to show the video to her prom date. <evil grin>

I hope I can feel better soon, because there's so much I'm not doing today, just because I'm resting and drinking plenty of fluids -- that's really kind of dull. :)
