Cleanup in Aisle 3

I just played a five-hour gig at a grocery store. I don't think I actually ever played a five-hour gig anywhere before, so I'm surprised my fingers didn't actually detatch themselves from my hand and run away in protest. But it was a fun afternoon, actually. The people were very nice and they seemed to like the music a lot, even though there wasn't applause (of course, I didn't really expect any). It's a really interesting store, not one of your typical Kroger/Meijer/generic supermarkets. They focus on fresh food and organic produce; there's also a gift and flower shop attached, and it's all set in kind of a rustic park-like location. I spent all my tips on deli food, which was delicious. (Don't worry, I got real money, too.)

I played a whole passel of cover tunes, mostly 70s folk rock "standards". I snuck in a few of mine and a few current-day singer-songwriter tunes, but I knew they wanted to hear mostly stuff they knew, which is cool by me. I was surprised at how much of them I remembered, since I hadn't played most of that material in years.

I managed to forget to have any business cards or promotional signage, as if I never played a gig before. Sheesh. :) Well, there might be a next time, so I'll try to prepare some.

If you're in the north-central Oakland County area, and you're not already shopping at Colasante's Produce and Plants on Milford Rd. just south of M-59, you're missing out. Especially on weekends, because they have live music every Saturday and Sunday to go along with your shopping pleasure.

A supermarket gig doesn't immediately sound like something pleasant, but that does seem as though it was the nicest possible version of one. Hurrah for parkland and deli!

It was very nice. I think the store had been there for a long time, and now exurbia is growing up around it (as it tends to do here, just creep and creep and creep and suddenly farmland is gone...). It's not the sort of gig that you think of being ideal, but I had fun with it. I'm just glad my voice held up, because I've been getting over a cold and sinus stuff for two weeks now.

It sounds sort of different and cool. It would be quite a surprise to be out shopping and run into the songdog(mi) playing away! Deli meat and tunes!

I was a bad self-promoter because a couple of friends live close enough that they could easily have been shopping there, if I had only let them know. But it came up too fast — I thought I'd be playing there next weekend at the soonest.

I wonder if I can get the market across the street from Mom's apartment to have me sing there. It's only three miles from me, and they've seen me with Mom a bunch of times now. :-)
