Cash and Rubin

At work, I'm typesetting a large-print book on Johnny Cash. (I don't know how much more I can say, really... I'd be inclined to link to the first edition of it on Amazon, but there might be contract legalities involved... in fact I may be fired already.) I've been working on lots of large-print books lately, but this is one of the few I've read while I worked on it -- not a lot, but enough. It's a good book. Reminds me of what always seemed admirable about the man, even though the book also chronicles the decades of substance abuse.

The book got me thinking about Rick Rubin, the producer of Cash's last seven albums. I finally found a pretty good news article on him from last July: Rick Rubin, music's rock. I'm pretty much amazed by what he's done in his twenty-odd year career, the wide range of different styles of music he's had a hand in, the legends he's worked with and how he's always made them sound like themselves with appropriate enhancements. In fact, I think I will ask him to produce my next album. I only wish I could work with a producer that good. The fact that he's a big ol' fuzzy guy is also interesting, given that the entertainment biz doesn't usually have room for that sort of alternative "look".
