Got a song in ya? How about 14?

There is such a thing as February Album Writing Month. The goal is to write 14 songs during the month, simliar to National Novel Writing Month. This will be the fourth year of the event. As with NaNoWriMo, the goal is quantity over quality. The songs can be prettied-up in March. Participants can record their songs and make them available for download, though I don't think a final, polished CD is the end goal - just the fourteen songs.

Me? I haven't finished a complete song in almost seven years. I don't think a jump-start like this is something I want to do. But I can't say it wasn't interesting.

But it wasn't February!

More seriously... I think I read about your prodigious output in your journal. Mazel tov!

Since my songs tend to happen at only 2-3 at a time.... and then only once every few months or so at the MOST, I'm not sure I could undertake this, either.

Sounds like something on a reality TV show, doesn't it? ("Extreme Songwriting")....

<dramatic voice>Coming this fall to Fox... we lock the top songwriters in a house... they cannot leave until they write an album. Who will crack? Who will win the house? </dramatic voice>

From whence comes inspiration?

I keep looking at Meijer. They must keep it near the ice cube trays.

(The joke there is, one year I was looking for ice cube trays, in summer, and never did find them anywhere. But since Meijer has everything, that was incomprehensible. So now when I go looking for things in stores and can't find them, I say they're near the ice cube trays.)

The more serious answer is, see Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones and Wild Mind. The general idea, or one of them, is that writing is a practice, and one does it every day regardless of the results. Some days you write crap, and some days you write good stuff. But writing regularly opens you up to when the inspiration hits. I recommend her books to any would-be writer, actually.

But don't come back and ask me why I don't practice what she says.

Hey, if I can do it, so can you. Start training now and you'll be in shape come February 1. FAWM? That's not any more attractive sounding than NaNoWriMo.

Not much training possible between now and Feb. 1. Well, maybe between now and Feb. 1, 2008....

They have fawms near Awbany, New York. They drink lots of cawfee there too. And tawk.
