My new home computer arrived today. I got in to work late, and there was a call from the mail room saying they had something from Dell waiting for me. It wasn't totally unexpected, after all, since I ordered it last week. But the fact that it came today instead of sometime next week was kind of a surprise. (Dave did say Dell always estimated delivery dates for the worst possible case, and delivered on the best.) So now my new toy is sitting under my desk, waiting to go home with me. It's fast, sleek, powerful, and best of all I saved $300 due to discounts through work. Happy dancing will commence shortly. But I want to know how I'm supposed to keep my hands off it till I get home.

I need to plan my Friday show tonight too, and rehearse a little. What an awful conundrum: play music tonight or set up a computer. If only all my choices were like that.

You may want to leave the computer someplace other than home until after your gig, or you will never get to anything else. New toy syndrom will take over and you will play till the sun comes up. Just a thought!

That's our experience with Dell too. They give an estimated shipping date, and then the thing arrives BEFORE it was shipped. ;p Have fun.

Thanks. :-) I just realized that I really should begin the computer set-up by cleaning everything off my desk first. We'll see how close to that ideal I get, because if I have to start cleaning first I'll get neither computer nor show set up.

Ah yes. Now we see the real common ground between the two of us. ;D

It didn't turn out to be too bad in the cleaning department. Once I got the old computer moved, the new computer takes up so much less room that it's like my desk grew. (That's credit to the monitor, which is flat panel instead of a CRT.) Of course, now I have a computer in my kitchen... and boxes for the new one... guess I can't avoid a mess no matter what.

Sounds about right. ;p When I replaced my primary home machine a year ago, I never really retired the old Windows 98 box. It's under my desk and can still be booted using a KVM switch. There are a couple of applications that I use, the most important being my weaving/design software, that just won't run under Linux. Now that I have VMware going on the Linux box, I can run them there, but I haven't given up the old Windows PC. Then there's the Amiga 3000T under the ham radio desk, still going strong. We have a genuine mixed network here.

Break a leg on the show! (Well, not literally....)

And your new toy wasn't a Mac? For shame, for shame...

I can only be so cool, and not any cooler, so I had to get a PC. But I still have the Mac at work, so I can pretend.

Thanks! I hope the show goes well because I spent the night setting up the computer and not working on the show. But I've done this before, so I'm not too worried. At least not at the moment. (Ask me tomorrow...)
