Take another trip around the sun

I only got two calendars this year from friends and family for Giftmas. Last year I got six. :)

Dave and I watched the new year come in with Dick Clark while Dave's neighbors set off fireworks. A few minutes later we tuned to Anderson Cooper's show on CNN just in time to watch a tape-delay of Key West's drag queen drop for midnight. I kid you not. A little bit later I caught Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion New Year's show (with Emmylou Harris and Sam Bush, among others). Tonight I learned that my mom caught that same bit of the PHC show, which kind of tickled me, but then I'm easily amused.

I came back to Detroit on New Year's Day. It was almost totally uneventful. The one "event" was when I was at the rest area on I-75 north of Cincinnati at the same time a van-load of Mennonites stopped there; men with beards and flat-brimmed hats and women in country-style dresses and bonnets. It was actually the most colorful bit of an extremely overcast day.

My time in metro Louisville was fine. We had lunch with animist on a incredibly spring-like day, as well as with another of Dave's friends the day before. I had lunch with my cousins Melinda and Matt on New Year's Eve during the day, after which we went to Ear-X-Tacy where I bought way less than I really wanted but still had fun. Dave made a pot roast for New Year's Eve that was very tasty and, well, perfect.

Finally, I bought and read much of Time Magazine's Person of the Year issue. I figured if I'm going to castigate something, I should try to learn more about it. My mind has not changed but my rationale is a bit better defined, or would be, if I get the time to write it out, which I hope to in the next couple of days.

Anyway, here's wishing that everyone's year has started well, and that it only gets better from here.

Glad to hear you had a good holiday. Now back to the grind, eh? I have today off, but tomorrow is a dreaded Wednesday and I have to work until 8 pm. ;p

Ugh. You have my condolences about Wednesday.
I got a cookbook in the mail while I was gone! It looks really cool -- Thanks! *hug*

If the recipes don't appeal, at least you can laugh at the pictures. ;p

There's another similar sized envelope that was mailed about the same time, so watch for it. Hopefully it survived the journey.

I didn't get it yesterday, but I guess no one in the States got things in the mail yesterday. So maybe today.

The pictures are cool, and I saw a few recipes that looked really interesting, meaning tasty.

Most of them other than the sourdough breads are pretty simple. I don't recommend setting out to make sourdough with no experience and armed only with Gary's recipes. ;p

What fun (low key) adventurous way to start the new year.

It was nice. I don't know if I could've done the skydiving into big snow-drifts like last year (though that was fun too, especially since we only wore underwear).
