Unlikely Allies

Getting off the freeway on my way home, I looked up to see a huge billboard, red with a URL in giant white letters: REPUBLICANSFORGRANHOLM.COM.

Republicans? For Granholm?

Indeed. Check out the website. Apparently not all the Republicans think Dick DeVos is the answer. DeVos is anti-abortion and anti-stem cell research. Sure, he's not talking about it much, but he and his family have been putting their money where their hearts are all along. Not only that, the Republicans for Granholm believe that the Democratic incumbent is a better pro-business choice than DeVos.

Here's a quote from their website:
We are a group of like-minded progressive Republicans and will continue to support the Republican party. But after careful and thoughtful consideration, we have concluded that the best course for our State of Michigan is to re-elect Governor Granholm. This was a hard decision and we’re going to disappoint some people in the Republican party. But, those are the extremists in the party who want to block stem-cell research and who turned out of office a good man like Congressman Joe Schwarz (MI-R 7th district).
Republicans who aren't extremists in Michigan? The mind boggles, in a good way.

I've seen two of these big plain red signs. 696 near Dequindre and 75 & 9 Mile.

If it wasn't for the nut jobs who think things like: "Genesis can double as a science textbook" I could easily be a Republican. (Or, as someone commented once: A Yankee (New England) Republican)

The one I saw was at 75 & 9 Mile. I wonder how widespread they are.

The thing about RepsForGranholm is that they don't seem to be taking any stand on the "moral" issues like abortion or intelligent design. They're for ... gasp ... good government! I think -- don't quote me, check their site -- that they're actually in disagreement with the extremist Republicans over abortion, stem cell research, and intelligent design, but their position is that we need a good governor, not a Christo-fascist ideology.

If I wasn't a Democrat for Granholm already, I'd be a Republican for Granholm.
