Going over to the ... light side?

I now have a Mac on my desk at work. It's a big tower, G4, with lots of RAM and lots of hard disk and a 19-inch monitor. Not to mention a lot of the cool stuff Macs are known for.

I've been tripped up today, though, on how it handles files on network drives. I'm finding there's not quite enough information where I'm used to looking for it. I'll have to remind myself to keep an eye on the menu bar at the top of the window. Also, the key mappings Mac uses conflict with the ones I need for the software I do page composition. That'll have to be rectified too, I think. I could actually be using a lot of tech support over the next few days. That'll be hard for me because normally I just thrash on my own till I learn how things work, but I don't exactly have time to thrash.

I spent too much time thrashing today, and forgot to send in a vacation request to my manager. Rats. I know she's doing project scheduling today too, or rather did during office hours. It's been that kind of day for me, despite getting the spiffy new toy.

jjfmi is probably taking bets on whether my new home computer turns out to be a Mac, once I get used to having one at work, so see him if you want in on the action.

Well, keep us posted. I am watching with interest. I am again considering a Mac for home, for online use. Microsoft keeps changing the rules I am used to anyway, what with abolishing double clicks and other stuff. If I am going to have to relearn everything on my next computer, it might as well be on a computer that doesn't crash twice a week.

I have high hopes, though at the moment I'm kind of stuck with the learning curve. But the things that are tripping me up are dealing with network servers, which you probably wouldn't have at home. It's not going to be insurmountable, but I just have to get used to it first.

Yeah, Microsoft keeps wanting to make Windows look like MacOS anyway... although MacOS keeps evolving too, and Apple seems a little less committed to backward compatibility than Microsoft (although that's just hearsay and not direct experience).
