At work, my cubicle is near the stairwell. For the last two months, most days there has been a strong cologne odor* nearby. It comes and goes. I don't know where the source is. I've tried to discreetly look down the aisle next to mine, but the cubicle across the wall from me is unoccupied. Maybe it's someone who sits nearby, or maybe it's someone who uses this stairwell a lot.

It's torture. I absolutely hate when people foist their perfumes and colognes on me. This one is particularly bad.

I'm thinking about creating a sign to post on the stairwell door that reads something like this:
To whoever is wearing cologne or perfume, or scented deodorant in this general area:
Please consider using less of it.
It's very distracting and may cause allergic reactions in people who are chemically sensitive.
Thank you.
Would this be too offensive in general? I would run this by my former manager for her input, since we still sit near each other and she might have to cope with fallout. But I want to know what you-all would think.

P.S. I'm moving to be near the rest of my department in the next month or two, so simply grinning and bearing it is an option. But I'd rather not bear it.

*I think it's cologne. A co-worker who sits near me asked one day "What's that smell -- it's like a cleaner or something." So maybe it's not cologne. It still is noxious and noissome.

Aha, odor cologne - not the nicest thing to stink of...

How come they don't make colognes and perfumes out of good smells? Like "fresh baked chocolate chip cookies" or "warm bread" or ...

Hm. I must be hungry.

Seems like a perfectly reasonable request to me.

It's probably better than saying "Quit trying to choke us with your fumes, doofus!" :-)

We've got a few folks like that at my workplace, too. The offenders here are women who apparently prefer bathing in their perfumes, rather than in soapy water. My partner and I passed one such lady at the entrance to our Student Union building, and both of us thought we were going to choke.

Even with my numerous allergies, I'm probably not as sensitive as you or other folks to perfume/cologne. I don't mind a faint whiff of perfume on a woman - but only if I'm close enough to be ...um....sniffing? (OK... that sounds a bit sick.) I sometimes wear after shave lotion, but not as often as I used to. (And certainly not by the bucketful.)

Sorry I missed y'all on Wednesday, btw! (I had intended to show up, but this new shift is wiping me out.) A fun time, I take it?

That doesn't seem sick to me at all. :)

We missed you Wednesday too. It was a lot of fun. The Pizza Hut in Ferndale now has a buffet table, which I could not resist. The slices are pretty small, fortunately, so I could have one of each without having to punch a new hole in the end of my belt. Xhedos was, well, Xhedos, but all the people who showed up made it good.
