Road Trip!

The interstate highway system in the U.S., formally called the Eisenhower Interstate System, is 50 years old this year. So here's a spiffy website from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration with history, pictures, audio, and more! That URL leads to a Flash intro, so if you want to skip that, go here.

Trivia: President Dwight Eisenhower was a big supporter of interstate highways after his experience in Europe during World War II. After supervising troop movements on poor American roads, he was mightily impressed by the Autobahn in Germany, so when he became president he worked to support similiar higher-quality highways here, and signed the bill in 1956 that provided funding to start building the highways.
