Disaster recovery worse than the disaster?

I never, ever thought there was a chance that I would agree with anything Trent Lott, Republican senator from Mississippi, does, but... he's alleging that State Farm Insurance Company is destroying documents that would work against State Farm in settling claims from Hurricane Katrina. He's not the first to allege this -- much less powerful and wealthy people have alleged this and some other kinds of insurance problems in the wake of Katrina.

I don't know whether State Farm is doing anything wrong. All I know is, there is so much fraud and ineptitude surrounding the whole Katrina recovery effort that I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the charges against all insurance companies were true. It's totally ridiculous that there are so many problems with this. I'm not saying that New Orleans should be rebuilt already; it was a category 4 hurricane with massive levee breaks, not just a Mardi Gras parade run amok. But at the rate things are going, it'll be decades and it'll cost billions upon billions and the courts will be clogged with fraud and corruption cases. Not only are my tax dollars going down the drain, but my insurance premiums are too -- State Farm is my insurance company. What the hell is wrong with people? And don't even get me started about the inability of government agencies to work together on this.
