A man walks into a coffee house....

I went to open mic at Xhedos tonight. Wanted coffee. Discovered they were out of decaf. They've been out of decaf for a WEEK. I'm too old to drink something caffeinated at night, guys.

Oh, I could go on about Xhedos. Sometime when we're all drunk, I will, too. But one could say it was sour grapes, because I didn't get to play tonight. And why was that? Because I got there too late to sign up. Now, I tried to call them early to sign up, since I had errands to run and dinner to eat. I tried calling three or four times. One time I got the message that the number had been disconnected, another time that "all circuits are busy", and another time I got nothing.

Well, that's what's going to happen if you try to call a closed coffee house. Not Xhedos. Gotham.

Yup. I remember Gotham's phone number, six and a half years after it closed. That's what I was dialing tonight. It did me no good tonight, either.

Sigh. At least there were a few good performers on stage tonight so it was worth listening.

Shame you didn't get to play. Come play at our place! I can guarantee we have decaf of several interesting varieties, and we can totally give you a lift from the airport... in probably the tiniest car you Merkuns have ever seen. :D

I'll make sure I take a shower before I leave, if we'll be in very close quarters (although after the plane trip and all the inspections, no guarantees on the long-term effectiveness of the shower). And I can ride on top if I don't fit inside. :)

I'm surprised there's a cut off time for signing up...or do they just have so many spots? (Personally, they should have bounced someone in your favor...)

The list has been filling up early. They can fit in only about 10 acts. At least two of the regular acts always have complicated setups (amps, drums, etc.) -- I think that's what did me in last night, because the host was going to try to fit me in at the very end, but time ran out.

I've played there enough to where it's not a big tragedy to me if I have to be audience all night. There were people who wanted to hear me (so they told me), so not playing was unfortunate.

The host at Gotham would've made room for me. Oh wait, that was me. (Some of the time, at least.)

I can relate. For the longest time, I got the mailing addresses and phone numbers of Xhedos and the Lavender Moon confused. (In all fairness, they WERE right across the street from each other...)

I almost came out to Ferndale last night. SongAnon had their showcase thingy at the Coffee Beanery, which I would've played and followed up with a trip to Xhedos. But I ended up watching "And Now For Something Completely Different" with Caitie. (And I've got "The Lumberjack Song" stuck in my head today....)

Gotham second location was right across the street from Xhedos too. (Small world, or a small downtown in Ferndale's case.)

It was an interesting night at Xhedos. There was a guy who played bass with both hands on the fretboard, Michael Hedges-style, and he was really good. And then he was followed by ... Bob the Singing Bass Player. Yes, it was an up and down night, but the ups were quite entertaining.

But you're a lumberjack, and you're OK.
