Just for Wolf, who likes big 'splodey landscapes a lot: Volcanoes Are Our Friends

Now the bad news: Kwame Kilpatrick was reelected mayor of Detroit. In a seemingly damning coincidence, a poll taken on Election Day asserts that one-third of the respondents would move out of Detroit, given a chance.

It is said (partly in the Freep article about the election, and partly in other local sources I've heard) that Kilpatrick was able to bring out a lot of big civil rights leaders to help him in the final weeks, perhaps even the biggest one despite her recent demise. This is quite the mystery to me, since by all appearances Freman Hendrix is just as African-American as Kilpatrick is. But I never claimed to really understand politics; I only minored in it at college.

This parallels in many ways the re-election of George W. Bush, in that voters decided that the incumbent might have done some things but deserved another go. Despite all the allegations of misuse of city funds and property, and despite the severe financial crisis that is not being addressed effectively, the voters decided that didn't matter and he should come back. He says he'll be a "great mayor" this time. We'll see. If he had been a better mayor in his first term, I'd be more inclined to believe him.
