Wilma's Force Surprises Keys Residents

Hello? It was a HURRICANE. You know, like Katrina and Rita.

Idiots. Sorry, but ... idiots.

You're right that it was a hurricane and shouldn't have been underestimated, partiularly if you're living on an island. Some of the most impressive storm pictures I'd seen (up to this year) were hurricane related: 2x4's through palm trees and boat decks draped over the bow.

But on the other hand it was hardly on the same scale as Katrina or Rita...even as a C3

That's why I said it was like Katrina and Rita. Not "like" in every way, but similar (wind, rain, and storm surge). I guess the thing that bugged me was that after all the authorities told them to leave -- they had a mandatory evacuation in the Keys, but apparently "mandatory" doesn't mean "you HAVE to" anymore -- and after the examples of the other hurricanes this year... I heard on the news that something like 80 percent of the permanent residents of Key West did not leave (that's a figure that should be confirmed, really). That just makes me shake my head.

Me, I would've been on the first bus out of Key West while Wilma was still southeast of Cozumel. But then I never did like swirly winds and floods.
