Poetry day

I saw this meme in a couple of other journals I read from people who aren't on my friends list but seem cool anyway. I could put in a few poems; it's hard to choose. Maybe I'll do this again next month to expose my runner-up. This month, I'll do the first poem that came to mind when I discovered the meme.

This Heavy Craft

The wax has melted
but the dream of flight
persists.
I, Icarus, though grounded
in my flesh
have one bright section in me
where a bird
night after starry night
while I'm asleep
unfolds its phantom wings
and practices.

—P.K. Page, The Hidden Room: Collected Poems, Vol. 2 (Erin, Ontario: The Porcupine's Quill, 1997)

Hmm.. I DO know one that has a verse ending with "Nantucket"... but the author(s) of the meme probably had something more substantial in mind. :-)

PK Page is a wonderful writer! I heard her read at the Eden Mills Writers' Festival not far from here about four years ago. Her Brazilian Journal is one of my favourite works of nonfiction.

This is the only writing of hers I've seen so far. I think I'll look for more by her.

Fascinating woman. She was the wife of a Canadian diplomat, the Ambassador to Brazil and I don't know where else. She was already in her 90s when I heard her read, but looking about 70. Here's her page on the Canadian Poetry website:
