Polar angel warms up to outdoors: Detroit Zoo's new cub goes exploring. The cub's name is Talini, which is an Inuktitut word meaning "snow angel." Apparently she had a whole lot of fun. The photo gallery is at http://www.freep.com/photos/2005/polarbear0414/index.htm. Prepare to melt.

What people do to animals is sometimes beyond belief. A polar bear in Puerto Rico? Make's me wanna slap someone.

Yeah, I hear you. That's a sad story that seems to have a happy ending, at least.

Oh yeah, just a happy little cub. If they stayed that small, we'd all want one. :-) I hope I can go see her for myself sometime soon, since I live only about 4 miles from the zoo. I'll have to take lots of pictures, if Mama Bear lets me that is.

At least in some cases, zoos are trying harder to give bears a nice environment to live in and giving them lots of stimulation. They're not always trapped in cages unable to do anything except eat.

The polar bears have a great space in the Arctic Ring of Life. The poor grizzly bear, though, is in the same little enclosure and it looked pretty unhappy when I was there last fall. Maybe its home will get a makeover soon.
